Nuclear fusion is the joining of two or more smaller nuclei to form one larger nucleus. In stellar cores, 4 hydrogen atoms fuse to form 1 helium atom, releasing great amounts of energy. In the course of this reaction, energy comes from the release of high energy photons, as well as from the conversion of some of the mass to energy.
